Clostridium difficile was first described in 1935, around the time many of the people who are now in long-term care facilities were born.  Today, C. diff is the No. 1 cause of acute infectious diarrhea in nursing homes, with symptoms that range from watery diarrhea to colitis that can be life threatening.

In fact, 29,000 people died in 2011 within 30 days of being diagnosed with C. diff, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. People who are old and frail are at greatest risk, with patients in nursing homes accounting for more than 100,000 of the 500,000 cases reported.

“C. difficile infections cause immense suffering and death for thousands of Americans each year,” said Dr. Tom Frieden, CDC director, in a statement.

C.diff. is an especially tough nut to crack. The pathogen produces spores that are exceptionally resistant to drying and heat, which means they can survive for months in the environment.

In long-term care facilities, where residents often share rooms, toilets and showers, the threat of spreading C. diff is high because the spores may be located on surfaces frequently touched by the residents, such as toilet seats, grab bars, bed rails and doorknobs.

Patients in hospital ACE units (Acute Care for the Elderly) also are vulnerable to healthcare-acquired infections (HAIs), including C. diff and MRSA.

Staph infections also are a significant threat. In a study of long-term care facilities in Hong Kong published in the peer-reviewed journal BMC Infectious Diseases, researchers found that 21.6 percent of residents tested positive for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus or MRSA.
