ROANOKE, Va. (WSET) — A local hospital is using UV light technology to cut back on infections in some of the most vulnerable patients. Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital is celebrating three years of zero central line infection rates in their NICU.  They’re doing this by using the AUVS “UV Box” to disinfect some of the most germ-infested things like cell phones and watches that might come into contact with the babies.  For the past three years, Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital’s NICU has maintained a central line infection rate of zero. This in part due to the AUVS “UV Box” used to kill germs off things like cell phones.

“Cell phones are riddled with germs. They’re probably the dirtiest thing you carry around other than a purse,” said Angela Alderman, a hospital spokesperson.

Bacteria from pretty much every surface you touch throughout the day is transferred to your phone. The AUVS “UV Box” kills 99.99 percent of the germs on your phone, which reduces the bacteria load to nearly nothing.
